Chilligan's Island: the Cancun Chronicles

Sometime in late May or June (of 2014), Travel + Leisure hooked me up with $2500 to go anywhere I wanted for participating in the T+L World's Best awards. I recruited my friend Wendy to join me, but that adventure wouldn't take place until January. We needed a break and we needed it now! I felt like everyone had been to Cancun except for me. This was also when I realized I had never been to any of the New 7 Wonders. Something had to be done. Fast.

One night, I found myself on the web as usual and I found a great deal on a trip to Cancun. Listen to me, you guys. If it sounds too good to be true-- IT IS! A little under $800 for flight, all-inclusive hotel, and tours? We signed up so fast! This was Wendy's first real trip outside of the USA and I knew we were going to have a blast! Little did we know we were on our way to a weekend on Chilligan's Island.

I avoid flying United as much as I can because I am an AAngel. Still, for such a cheap trip, I bit the bullet and charged it to the game. We stayed at the BelleVue Beach Paradise, and although I had read the reviews online, I chose to see for myself. Big mistake. Huge! The hotel is dilapidated, the wifi non existent, and the food is barely edible. I am not even picky! I am, at heart, a hostel girl... but I would never stay here again. The only thing going for this ancient hotel is that it is very close to the water.

Oddly enough, the smell of the beach mixed in with the humidity took me way back! My family used to vacation during the summers at this place in Ensenada called Quintas Papagayo. We used to pack up pots and pans, the whole shebang. We stopped going when I was about 12 or 13, maybe younger, but I still have fond memories of hanging out on the beach and the perpetual feeling of sand in my ears and hair. Brains are so weird!

Anyway, I am a sucker for nostalgia but even that was not enough to sway me. Once we settled in and narrowly avoided a timeshare presentation (one of my biggest peeves!), we went outside to take a dip.

We decided to make the best of it. I always find the humor in awful situations and this was no different. We stayed in this 2 star trash bin made out of popsicle sticks. They didn't even have AC! Are you kidding me? Whatever. This was probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my entire life. No hyperbole. We had a room with a giant window that provided a gorgeous view and an excellent breeze. This was the only thing that prevented us from melting. I swear, my makeup would have looked like a Picasso if it weren't for that breeze. The next morning, we woke up and were greeted by more of nature's beauty. This was taken from our room!

We had survived the night and little did we know... the worst was yet to come. But I am getting ahead of myself. Back to the story! We were ready to take a trip to Chichén Itzá! I was finally gonna see my first World Wonder. Spoiler alert: It was AWESOME.
